One biscuit was strong and could survive at least three dunks before falling apart

To dunk a biscuit is a very British thing. And it takes a certain biscuit to be up to the task.

You want something with a bit of integrity, that won't turn to mush immediately, but you also want something that will soften and melt in your mouth.

For me, the ultimate dunking biscuit is a digestive. Plain, no chocolate (I do not want chocolate melting into my tea), and traditional.

There are a few different options when choosing a digestive to dunk, though, so I tested out the classic McVitie's and compared it to own brand versions from Sainsbury's, M&S and Lidl.

The original. I already knew I enjoyed a McVitie's digestive dunked in my tea and I wasn't disappointed.

This was a strong biscuit, it had a lot of integrity and could survive at least three dunks before falling apart.

After one dunk it was softening but still had quite a lot of crunch.

It peaked at two dunks, though, soft and warm without crumbling into my tea.

This biscuit was sweet with a salty after-taste. A perfect teatime companion.

This digestive didn't hold up as well. It quickly became mushy and lost its snap.

It also completely lacked flavour. No sweet, no salt. It didn't feel like a treat because it didn't feel like anything...just mush.

Sorry Sainsbury's but I was very unimpressed with this digestive.

This isn't just a digestive...it's an M&S digestive.

And it's pretty good - still not as strong as McVitie's but was made of sturdy stuff so didn't lose its integrity post-dunk.

It wasn't as sweet as McVitie's but it had way more flavour than the Sainsbury's version, with a nice salty aftertaste.

The M&S digestive was a respectable biscuit.

London has it all - the best nightlife, food, drink, events, markets, everything!

This biscuit seemed great at first, very sturdy, good dunking durability...but then I tasted it.

It had a really strange taste. There was something about the salt in it...it tasted odd.

Honestly, I usually love Lidl but this biscuit just wasn't it.

It tasted like the kind of thing my mum would force me to eat as a child because it was healthy; and making sure I finished it felt like a punishment.

Not what I want on my cheeky afternoon teatime break.

McVities is the original and it's the best - but it is the most expensive.

M&S digestives are a good alternative and have a nice crunch to them with a gentle flavour.

Sainsbury's tasted like nothing, but Lidl was worse because it tasted bad. The Lidl digestive is dunkable in that it's made of strong stuff.

But that stuff doesn't taste good, and I personally wouldn't want it in my tea or my mouth.
